Army Seizes Cash, Vehicle in Chittagong-14 Raid

In a significant pre-election operation, the Bangladesh Army conducted a late-night raid on Tuesday in the Chandanaish Upazila of Chittagong-14 constituency, seizing BDT 10,49,000 in cash and a microbus. Three individuals were detained during the operation, which has since drawn heightened attention from both political and administrative circles in the area.

Chandanaish police officer-in-charge, Mohammad Ilyas Khan, confirmed that the raid was led by Army Captain Khaled. Following the operation, the confiscated cash and vehicle were handed over to the local police station under the directives of the Returning Officer.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized funds may belong to an independent candidate contesting in the upcoming elections. “We are examining the source and legality of the cash. Once verification is complete, appropriate measures will be taken in line with the Election Commission’s guidance,” said Rajib Hossain, Assistant Returning Officer of Chittagong-14.

A video of the raid has circulated widely on social media, showing a person standing beside the microbus while army personnel count the cash. When questioned, the individual identified himself as the estate manager of Mizanul Haque Chowdhury. Chowdhury is running as an independent candidate in the Chittagong-14 constituency under the football symbol, making the operation politically sensitive.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion among local residents and political observers. Authorities emphasise that law enforcement and administrative agencies are actively ensuring that the electoral process remains transparent and secure.
