In a landmark initiative aimed at empowering impoverished and low-income families in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to inaugurate the pilot phase of the Family Card distribution programme on 10 March 2026. Under this initiative, selected households will receive a monthly cash allowance of BDT 2,500, providing direct financial support to vulnerable women and their families.
Announcing the development on Tuesday (24 February) after a meeting on the Family Card at the Secretariat, Minister for Social Welfare Abu Zafar Mohammad Zahid Hossain highlighted the scheme’s dual focus on women’s empowerment and household economic resilience. Presiding over the meeting, the Prime Minister reiterated that empowering women translates into strengthened families and, by extension, a more self-reliant next generation. “This initiative forms a key promise of the Nationalist Party’s election manifesto,” the minister stated.
The pilot project was approved following recommendations from a sub-committee of the Cabinet, chaired by the Finance Minister, which evaluated the feasibility and implementation strategy. The Secretariat meeting included participation from relevant ministers, government advisors, and senior officials.
The initial phase of the Family Card programme will roll out in 14 upazilas across various divisions, with one union per upazila selected for the pilot. Minister Hossain noted, “The programme will commence simultaneously in all 14 upazilas on 10 March. It is designed as a phased initiative that will gradually expand nationwide.”
Beneficiaries will be drawn from the poorest segments of society, ensuring that women from destitute, poor, and low-income households are prioritised. Each qualifying household is expected to receive BDT 2,500 per month, providing a stable financial cushion and fostering economic independence.
