Rangpur Riders Set Professional Standard with Early Player Payments

Rangpur Riders have set an encouraging precedent ahead of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) by paying 50 per cent of their players’ salaries even before a ball has been bowled in the tournament. At a time when payment disputes have often cast a shadow over the league, the former champions’ proactive move has been widely welcomed by players and observers alike.

On Wednesday, during a training session at the Bashundhara Sports City, the Rangpur Riders management formally handed over half of the agreed match fees to their squad members. Senior figures such as captain Nurul Hasan Sohan and star batter Litton Das were among those who received the payment. The gesture was seen as a clear signal of professionalism and financial discipline from the franchise.

Under standard BPL regulations, player payments are structured in three instalments. Franchises are required to pay 25 per cent of the contract value before the tournament begins, a further 50 per cent during the course of the competition, and the remaining 25 per cent within one month of the tournament’s conclusion. Rangpur Riders, however, chose to go beyond the minimum requirement by paying 50 per cent upfront instead of the stipulated 25 per cent.

This early payment has been interpreted as an effort to ensure players can focus entirely on cricket without financial anxiety. Historically, the BPL has frequently been marred by salary-related controversies. In the previous edition, players from Durbar Rajshahi were forced to boycott training sessions after failing to receive their dues on time, a situation that drew heavy criticism and embarrassed the league.

Against that backdrop, Rangpur Riders’ approach stands out. The franchise has built a reputation over successive seasons for meeting contractual obligations promptly and providing players with reliable facilities, accommodation, and logistical support. Their consistency off the field has often been cited as a key reason behind a stable dressing-room environment.

Overseas all-rounder Khushdil Shah openly praised the management’s professionalism. “The Rangpur Riders management is excellent. Alhamdulillah, there is nothing for the players to worry about here,” he said, expressing gratitude for the financial clarity provided ahead of the competition.

Many believe such practices not only boost morale but also translate into stronger on-field performances. When players are assured of timely payments, they are better positioned to commit fully to preparation, fitness, and tactical planning—crucial factors in a high-pressure T20 tournament like the BPL.

The twelfth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League is set to begin on 26 December. The opening match in Sylhet will see Sylhet Strikers take on Rajshahi Warriors, followed by an evening clash between Noakhali Express and Chattogram Challengers. As the countdown begins, Rangpur Riders’ early payment initiative has already provided a positive talking point, reinforcing the importance of professionalism in strengthening the credibility and future of the BPL.
