A professional drug trafficker has been arrested in Savar with a substantial consignment of Yaba tablets during a special operation conducted by the Dhaka District North Detective Police. Authorities confirmed that approximately 2,400 pieces of Yaba, with an estimated street value of around BDT 720,000, were recovered from the suspect.
The arrest was disclosed on Wednesday afternoon through an official press briefing. Law enforcement identified the detainee as 45-year-old Md. Saiful Islam, son of the late Syed Wajuddin from Shaldha village under Naria Police Station in Shariatpur district. Investigators believe he had been involved in narcotics trafficking for a prolonged period, operating as part of an organised supply network.
According to police sources, the anti-narcotics drive was carried out under the directive of the Superintendent of Police of Dhaka District, with continuous supervision from the North Detective Division. Acting on intelligence, officers conducted a targeted raid in the Bank Colony area of Savar Municipality, a location suspected of being used as a transit point for drug distribution.
During the operation, Saiful Islam was detained in a suspicious condition. A subsequent search of his body and belongings led to the recovery of the Yaba tablets, carefully concealed in a bag. Preliminary interrogation revealed that he allegedly sourced the drugs in bulk from the Teknaf area of Cox’s Bazar, a well-known entry point for smuggled narcotics, before distributing them across Savar and other parts of the country.
Investigators further stated that the accused had been operating through a structured network, suggesting the involvement of additional associates. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate. Police also confirmed that the arrested individual has a prior case related to narcotics offences, indicating repeated involvement in illegal drug trade activities.
Following the arrest, a new case has been filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act, and he has been sent to court for further legal proceedings. Law enforcement officials emphasised that drug trafficking continues to pose a severe threat to society, particularly by targeting young people and contributing to social instability.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to intensifying anti-drug operations across the region to dismantle organised networks and curb the spread of narcotics.
