In a harrowing incident in Dhaka, a young schoolgirl, identified as Shahriar Sharmin Binti, was brutally stabbed to death outside her residence in the Rayar Bazar area. Authorities from Hazaribagh Police Station suspect the killing may have stemmed from a romantic dispute. The alleged perpetrator, a young man named Siyam, is currently being sought by police.
The tragic attack occurred around 10:00 PM on Wednesday in a narrow lane near the family’s five-storey building. Binti, an eighth-grade student at Rayar Bazar High School, lived with her parents in a rented flat in Hazaribagh. She was the eldest of two children in the family, whose ancestral home is in Kachikata, Sakhipur.
According to her father, businessman Bellal Hossain, the evening had started innocuously. “Binti went out with her younger brother, Nabil, to buy vegetables,” he recounted, visibly distraught at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the girl was taken. “After dropping her at the flat entrance, Nabil went to the mosque. Moments later, we heard a commotion and rushed downstairs to find Binti lying stabbed, surrounded by a crowd.” She was initially taken to Shikder Medical before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College for treatment, but she succumbed to her injuries.
Her mother, Nadia Hossain, told reporters, “Siyam had been troubling Binti over mobile phone interactions for the past three or four years. I had previously warned him. Tonight, he has killed my daughter. We demand justice for Binti.”
The hospital police camp officer, Inspector Md. Faruk, confirmed that Binti sustained multiple stab wounds to her shoulders and back. Her body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Hazaribagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Hafizur Rahman, told Somokal that preliminary investigations indicate the murder was linked to a romantic conflict. “Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused,” he said.
