Scotland claimed their first World Cup victory in 36 years with a 1-0 win over Haiti at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Sunday. The result positions the European nation at the top of Group C, ahead of tournament favourites Brazil and Morocco, who registered a 1-1 draw in their opening match.
The tournament marks Scotland’s first World Cup appearance since 1998, whilst Haiti returned to the global stage for the first time in 52 years, following their debut appearance in West Germany in 1974. With the victory, Scotland secured their first win at a World Cup finals since defeating Sweden 2-1 during the 1990 tournament in Italy.
First-Half Breakthrough
Scotland initiated the offensive pressure early in the match and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute. Finding himself in open space, captain Scott McTominay struck a powerful effort that clipped the top of the crossbar before going out of play.
The decisive goal arrived in the 28th minute through midfielder John McGinn. The opportunity developed from an attacking phase inside the penalty box, where Che Adams mishit a shot. The ball struck Haitian goalkeeper Johny Placide and deflected into an open area. McGinn reacted quickly to hit a shot from 13 yards out, which deflected off a Haitian defender and beat Placide to find the back of the net.
Second-Half Defiance
Haiti grew into the match during the second half and created two significant opportunities to equalise. In the 74th minute, Louicius Don Deedson delivered a precise cross to Wilson Isidor, who failed to convert the chance.
The Caribbean side threatened again in the 84th minute when Frantzdy Pierrot directed a powerful header towards goal, but the attempt drifted narrowly wide of the left post. Despite late pressure, Haiti were unable to secure their first-ever World Cup point.
Both teams will play their next Group C fixtures on 20 June. Scotland will remain in Foxborough to face Morocco at the Gillette Stadium, whilst Haiti will travel to Philadelphia to play Brazil.
