Students from the seven government colleges in Dhaka are set to stage a protest march today, Wednesday, 3 December, calling for the prompt implementation of the proposed Dhaka Central University Ordinance. The demonstration will commence at 11 a.m. from Dhaka College and conclude at Eden Mohila College.
In a statement, the Seven College University Transformation Movement highlighted that despite prolonged discussions regarding the ‘Dhaka Central University Ordinance–2025’, no final decision has yet been announced. The delay has left students in a state of uncertainty, with concerns over institutional identity and the continuity of academic activities.
The statement noted that the Ministry of Education had sought public opinion on the draft ordinance between 24 September and 9 October. Following this consultation period, three meetings were held involving teachers, students, alumni, and members of civil society. Despite these discussions, the ordinance remains unfinalised, prompting student unrest.
The movement represents over 150,000 students across the seven colleges expected to fall under the new university structure. The prolonged uncertainty has sparked fears regarding administrative procedures, examination schedules, and future academic recognition. Students have urged the authorities to act swiftly to formalise the ordinance, thereby providing clarity on institutional governance and identity.
Following today’s demonstration, the student movement has announced that a press conference will be held at the main gate of Dhaka College, where they will reiterate their demand for immediate government action. Students from all seven colleges under the proposed Dhaka Central University structure are encouraged to participate collectively, demonstrating a unified stance.
Observers say the protest highlights broader concerns among students nationwide about delays in educational reforms and the need for timely government decisions to avoid disruption to academic progression.
