A violent confrontation in Sirajganj’s Tarash Upazila left seven people, including women, injured on Saturday (14 February), following disputes arising from post-election tensions. The incident occurred around 10:30 am in the village of Gurma under Madhainagar Union.
According to local sources and hospital officials, the victims sustained injuries during an attack reportedly triggered by disagreements over voting instructions on election day. Those injured are Syam Hossain (13), Sultan Mahmud (32), Sabura Khatun (26), Rahim Hossain (30), Abdul Gafur (32), Mosha Mostarin Parvin (30), and Rehena Khatun (20).
Initially, the injured were admitted to the 50-bed Tarash Hospital. As the condition of five victims worsened, they were subsequently transferred to Sirajganj Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Tarash police station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Habibur Rahman, confirmed the incident, stating, “Police were deployed to the scene to control the situation. No formal complaint has been filed yet. Once a complaint is received, appropriate action will be taken.”
Eyewitnesses said the clash stemmed from conflicting instructions given to villagers on election day. Former Madhainagar Union BNP organisational secretary Amin Uddin allegedly instructed certain households to attend their assigned polling centres early. However, members of those families later followed guidance from another BNP leader in the village, Md. Nasir Uddin, prompting anger among Amin Uddin and his supporters.
According to locals, Amin Uddin, along with 7–8 supporters, visited several homes with sticks and assaulted family members, resulting in the injuries. The attack reportedly targeted both male and female family members, igniting panic within the community.
When approached, Amin Uddin denied any involvement in the attack. Meanwhile, former Tarash Upazila BNP president S.M. Afsar Ali stated, “Both parties involved belong to BNP. Upon learning of the incident, I went to the hospital to ensure the injured received medical care. I will later sit with both sides in Gurma village to resolve the matter.”
