Police have arrested a man in Naogaon after he was accused of brutally assaulting his 67-year-old mother and severing a tendon in her leg in an alleged attempt to force her into transferring her property into his name.
The suspect, Asaduzzaman Shamim, 37, is a resident of Bastabor village under Alampur Union in Dhamoirhat Upazila. He was taken into custody following a police operation conducted on Thursday night (25 June) based on confidential information.
According to local sources and the case statement, the victim, Anjuman Ara, owns several parcels of land. Investigators believe that Shamim had been pressuring his elderly mother for an extended period to transfer ownership of the property to him. When she repeatedly refused, the pressure allegedly escalated into physical violence.
The case alleges that on 7 June, Shamim struck his mother on the head with a brick, leaving her seriously injured. She received medical treatment before returning home after her condition improved. However, the violence allegedly continued.
Just a week later, on 14 June, Anjuman Ara was reportedly attacked again. According to the complaint filed with police, Shamim used a sharp knife to cut the tendon in her right leg, causing severe injuries. The alleged assault has drawn widespread concern among local residents because of the extreme nature of the violence and the fact that the victim is an elderly parent.
Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and began efforts to locate the suspect. Acting on intelligence, officers carried out a raid in Bastabor village and arrested Shamim. He is now being prepared for presentation before the court, where legal proceedings are expected to continue.
Naogaon Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam said the district police would take a firm stance against crimes involving violence and abuse directed at parents. He described such offences as deeply reprehensible and said that anyone found responsible would face strict legal action in accordance with the law. He also stressed that no offender would receive special treatment or leniency.
Incidents involving disputes over family property occasionally lead to legal battles in Bangladesh, but allegations of serious violence against elderly parents continue to raise concerns among law enforcement agencies and rights advocates. Authorities have reiterated that victims of domestic abuse should seek legal protection and medical assistance without delay, while police remain committed to investigating such cases thoroughly and ensuring that those responsible are brought before the courts.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further legal action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
