The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has confirmed a series of changes to the squads selected for its upcoming Victory Day exhibition match, following the withdrawal of five national cricketers, most notably opening batsman Soumya Sarkar. The friendly fixture, organised to commemorate Bangladesh’s Victory Day, will see leading national players divided into two symbolic teams — Odommo (Indomitable) and Oporajeyo (Unconquered) — in a celebration that blends sport with national remembrance.
CWAB had earlier announced the two squads, but revisions became unavoidable after Soumya Sarkar formally stepped aside. In his place, Naim Sheikh has been drafted into the Odommo squad, ensuring balance at the top of the batting order. Alongside Soumya, four other players — Nasum Ahmed, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Sheikh Mehedi Hasan, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib — have also withdrawn their names from the originally published list.
Although CWAB has not publicly specified the reasons behind these withdrawals, such decisions are generally attributed to workload management, fitness considerations, or personal commitments, particularly in the lead-up to international assignments. Exhibition matches of this nature are intended to honour the occasion rather than place undue physical demands on players.
The changes have prompted fresh inclusions, particularly in the Oporajeyo squad. Jisan Alam, SM Meherob Ahin, Rakibul Hasan, and Ripon Mondol have been called up to replace the departing players, providing an opportunity for emerging and fringe cricketers to share the field with established internationals on a nationally significant day.
Leadership arrangements for the match remain unchanged. The Odommo side will be captained by Bangladesh’s One-Day International skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz, whose calm authority and all-round abilities make him a natural leader. The Oporajeyo team will be led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, a technically gifted batsman widely regarded as one of the most composed figures in the current national set-up.
The Victory Day match has become an important annual tradition within Bangladeshi cricket. Beyond competition, it serves as a symbolic tribute to the nation’s resilience and independence, offering supporters a chance to celebrate history through sport. For players, it provides a relaxed yet meaningful platform to engage with fans and honour the sacrifices made for the country’s freedom.
With the revised squads now finalised, anticipation continues to grow as cricket enthusiasts look forward to a fitting and festive contest on Victory Day
