Sudden Fog Disrupts Life in Dinajpur

Dinajpur, nestled at the foothills of the Himalayas, was enveloped in a sudden dense fog on Friday (30 January), bringing the district to a virtual standstill despite a slight rise in temperature. The Met Office recorded the morning temperature at 14.5°C, marginally higher than the previous day’s 14.4°C.

The thick fog has drastically reduced visibility on roads and highways, compelling drivers to keep their headlights on even during daytime. Commuters faced significant delays, and public transport operated at reduced speeds. Farmers, meanwhile, are increasingly anxious about their boro paddy and potato nurseries, which are vulnerable to the chill and persistent fog. Many have resorted to covering seedlings with polythene sheets in an attempt to protect them.

In recent days, Dinajpur had experienced a gradual warming trend, with sunshine returning intermittently. However, Friday’s sudden cold spell, combined with the dense fog, has disrupted daily life and placed additional stress on both humans and livestock. Cattle and other farm animals have reportedly become lethargic due to the persistent cold.

Local residents expressed their concerns. Matiur Rahman of Biral Upazila said, “The sun had been out for a few days, and temperatures were rising. But today, the sudden fog has returned. Farmers are worried about their boro paddy and potato seedlings. If the fog persists, there is a real risk of crop damage.”

Similarly, Moklesur Rahman from Gohair village, Shashara Union, Sadar Upazila, explained, “The severe cold is causing our boro nurseries to wither. Many of us are covering seedlings with polythene. Although some boro seedlings are ready, cold weather and a shortage of labour are delaying transplantation.”

The Met Office has assured the public that the fog is expected to lift gradually as the day progresses. Acting Officer Toffazzal Hossain stated, “We have had sunshine for the past few days, but today’s dense fog is temporary. Visibility should improve by the afternoon.”

Authorities have advised farmers to continue protecting their crops and to monitor weather updates closely. The Department of Agriculture has also cautioned that prolonged cold and fog could affect boro paddy transplantation and early potato growth, urging precautionary measures to minimise potential damage.

As Dinajpur braces for further weather fluctuations, residents and farmers alike remain vigilant, balancing daily routines with the challenges posed by the sudden winter fog.
