In a shocking incident in Bagerhat’s Kachua upazila, a wanted criminal, Nadim Sheikh, 33, was forcibly freed by his associates after a police officer was brutally attacked. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 18 March, at around 3:00 pm in Khalishakhali village under Maghia Union.
Nadim Sheikh, the son of the late Goffar Sheikh, had been wanted in connection with a robbery case dating back to 2024. Local authorities report that he also has a history of assault, extortion, and land grabbing in the area. The police officer injured during the attack has been identified as Constable Raju Khan, who serves at Kachua Police Station.
According to police sources, a seven-member team led by Sub-Inspector Anichur Rahman and Assistant Sub-Inspector Imdadul Islam carried out an operation to arrest Nadim Sheikh at his residence. As the officers apprehended Nadim, his younger brother, Sagar Sheikh, launched a sudden attack on the police using a locally made sharp weapon.
During the assault, Constable Raju Khan was struck on his right arm, sustaining severe injuries. Taking advantage of the chaos, Nadim and Sagar Sheikh managed to flee the scene. Constable Khan was immediately rushed to Kachua Upazila Health Complex. Due to the deterioration of his condition, he was subsequently referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Kachua Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Shafiqul Rahman, stated, “While conducting the arrest, the suspect’s brother unexpectedly attacked our officers. Constable Raju Khan was seriously injured. Operations to apprehend the perpetrators are ongoing.”
This is not the first time police in Kachua have faced violent resistance during arrests. On 20 March 2022, Assistant Sub-Inspector Robiul Islam was seriously injured in a terrorist attack in the nearby village of Shommankathi. Following political unrest in 2025, four officers were injured when BNP activists attacked police while trying to prevent the release of a suspect.
