Teen Held Over Child Killing in Rangpur

A young man has been detained by police in connection with the widely discussed killing of nine-year-old Sanjida Akhtar in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur, a case that has sparked shock and grief across the locality.

According to Taraganj Police Station, the suspect, identified as Md Mujahid Islam (18), was taken into custody late Monday night from his family home in Bhimpur Koranipara village. He is the son of Md Sekendar Ali. Law enforcement officials confirmed that he is currently being interrogated as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Authorities have stated that further legal action will depend on the outcome of questioning and forensic findings.

The incident dates back to last Friday, when Sanjida Akhtar, a school-going child aged nine, went missing while playing near her residence. Family members, along with local residents, immediately launched a search operation across nearby areas, but no trace of her was found that day. The following day, Saturday afternoon, villagers discovered her body in a paddy field adjacent to the Dalia canal and alerted her family. Police later recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Local residents have alleged that visible injuries were found on the child’s body, particularly around the head and eyes, raising suspicions of violent assault prior to death. However, police have urged caution, stating that no official conclusion has yet been reached and that the post-mortem report will be crucial in establishing the facts.

The tragedy has triggered widespread anger and anxiety in the Taraganj area, with residents demanding swift identification and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
