A reduction in the supply of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG)—imported natural gas that is cooled into liquid form for transport and later converted back into gas—has led to concerns over low-pressure gas distribution across Bangladesh, according to the country’s major utility provider, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited.
The company has warned that customers across all categories, including residential, commercial, industrial, and compressed natural gas (CNG) users, may experience temporary disruptions and lower-than-usual gas pressure. The announcement was made through an official notice issued on Monday, highlighting immediate supply constraints affecting the national distribution network.
According to the notice, the disruption began on Monday night and may continue until Thursday. During this period, areas under the extensive distribution network of Titas Gas—including the capital and surrounding regions—are likely to experience noticeable declines in gas pressure. In some locations, this may result in partial or intermittent interruptions to household cooking, industrial production processes, and fuel supply for CNG-powered vehicles.
Officials from the company attributed the situation primarily to a reduction in RLNG imports, which has created a temporary imbalance in the national gas supply chain. As RLNG constitutes a significant portion of the country’s gas mix, any fluctuation in import volumes can quickly affect downstream distribution stability.
Despite the disruption, the utility provider has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation in real time and implementing necessary operational and technical measures to mitigate the impact. Authorities have also expressed optimism that normal supply levels will be restored promptly once import volumes stabilise.
The company further noted that efforts are ongoing to minimise inconvenience to consumers. However, it acknowledged that the temporary shortage may still affect daily life and economic activity, particularly in gas-dependent sectors.
Industries relying heavily on natural gas for manufacturing processes may face reduced output or operational delays. Similarly, households could experience inconsistent gas flow for cooking, especially during peak usage hours. The transport sector, particularly CNG-run vehicles, may also see slower refuelling and longer waiting times at filling stations.
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Cause of disruption | Reduced supply of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) |
| Affected area | Regions under Titas Gas distribution network |
| Affected sectors | Residential, commercial, industrial, and CNG users |
| Duration | From Monday night to expected Thursday |
| Likely impacts | Low gas pressure, cooking disruptions, reduced industrial output, transport delays |
| Response measures | Continuous monitoring and operational adjustments by authorities |
The utility provider has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and reiterated its commitment to restoring stable gas pressure as soon as supply conditions improve. It has also called on consumers for patience and cooperation during the temporary disruption.
