A violent clash erupted between a bridal party and local villagers over the insufficient serving of beef during a wedding reception in the Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district. The physical confrontation resulted in injuries to at least ten individuals from both opposing sides. The incident took place on Monday afternoon in Deora Nayakanda village, which is situated within the Kalamridha Union of the upazila.
Dispute Triggers Violence at Reception Feast
According to verified reports from local residents and law enforcement authorities, the altercation began during the second phase of the wedding feast organised for the marriage ceremony of Lablu Sheikh’s daughter. Tensions arose when allegations surfaced that an inadequate portion of beef had been served to the guests. Furthermore, accusations were made that several guests from the village were intentionally accumulating and hiding pieces of meat underneath their dining tables.
The allegations sparked a heated verbal argument between the members of the bridal party and the local villagers present at the gathering. The dispute rapidly escalated from a verbal disagreement into a full-scale physical conflict that lasted for approximately one and a half hours. During the ninety-minute confrontation, both factions engaged in continuous chases and counter-chases, utilising wooden sticks and throwing bricks and stones at one another. The widespread violence resulted in bodily injuries to both male and female attendees, including the father and the grandfather of the bride.
Among the ten injured individuals, four have been identified by name as Arif Mia, Sahid Matubbor, Shorap Matubbor, and Momtaz Begum. These four casualties were transported to the local Upazila Health Complex to receive emergency medical treatment for their wounds, while the remaining injured victims received first aid locally within the area.
Allegations of Looting and Premeditated Attack
The father of the bride, Lablu Sheikh, presented a contrasting account regarding the true motive behind the violence. He formally alleged that the attack on his daughter’s wedding reception was premeditated and driven by pre-existing local political groupings and rivalries rather than a spontaneous dispute over food distribution.
Lablu Sheikh further claimed that the attackers deliberately vandalised the event venue and destroyed various equipment belonging to the decorators hired for the ceremony. In addition to the property damage, the bride’s father asserted that the assailants looted approximately 200,000 taka in cash. According to his statement, this sum of money consisted of funds collected as “Nesar” (traditional wedding monetary gifts or contributions) during the festive event.
Police Intervention and Conflict Resolution
The Chairman of the Kalamridha Union Parishad, Md Rezaul Matubbor, confirmed the occurrence of the rioting, stating that the initial clash was centred entirely around the consumption of meat at the wedding house. He noted that peace was eventually restored following the arrival and intervention of the police forces, allowing the marriage formalities to be completed in a normal manner.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Bhanga Police Station, Md Mizanur Rahman, corroborated the details of the incident, confirming that two groups had engaged in a violent clash following a dispute regarding the serving of meat at a wedding programme. The police chief noted that after the initial deployment of law enforcement personnel, the matter was formally resolved and mediated through the direct intervention and arbitration of local village elders. The Officer-in-Charge explicitly stated that while the situation has been de-escalated by the community leaders, the police administration will initiate formal legal proceedings if any written complaint is submitted to the police station by the affected victims.
