Faridpur’s district branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has permanently expelled three of its leaders from Alfadanga Upazila and municipality for publicly supporting an independent candidate, in violation of party discipline and decisions.
The announcement was made on Sunday, 25 January, through an official statement signed by Faridpur district BNP convener Syed Modarres Ali Eesa and member-secretary A. K. Kibria Swapon. The expulsion follows evidence that the leaders actively campaigned for an independent candidate in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Elections, ignoring the party-endorsed candidate.
The expelled leaders are:
| Name | Position | Organisation |
|---|---|---|
| S. M. Khoshbur Rahman Khokon | Vice-President | Alfadanga Upazila BNP |
| Rezaul Karim Reza | Vice-President | Alfadanga Municipality BNP |
| Sirajul Islam Soza | Sports Secretary | Alfadanga Municipality BNP |
The statement specifies that the individuals’ actions constituted a “clear breach of party constitution and discipline” by refusing to support the BNP-nominated and supported candidate, Khondkar Nasirul Islam, Vice-President of the Bangladesh Krishak Party. Instead, they openly aligned with independent candidate Arifur Rahman Dolon.
Alfadanga Upazila BNP General Secretary Nurjamal Khosru stated that the leaders had long distanced themselves from party activities. “Their overt support for a rival candidate in the election compelled the district leadership to take stringent action to uphold party discipline,” he said.
Speaking to Kalbela, district BNP convener Syed Modarres Ali Eesa emphasised, “Discipline within the party is our greatest strength during elections. This decision is not a personal vendetta but a clear message: holding a party position carries responsibilities, and any member who openly supports an independent candidate will face consequences.”
Efforts to contact the expelled leaders by phone were unsuccessful, and they have not commented publicly on the matter. Sources within the district BNP have also indicated that the involvement of several other members of affiliated organisations is being reviewed, and further disciplinary measures may follow if necessary.
The district leadership has confirmed that such strict actions will continue in the future to safeguard party discipline. BNP officials reiterated that adherence to party policy and decisions, particularly during elections, is non-negotiable for all office-bearers, reinforcing a zero-tolerance approach toward breaches of discipline.
