Three Children Die Amid Measles Surge

Three more children have died in Rajshahi after showing symptoms consistent with measles, bringing renewed concern over a continuing outbreak affecting the region. The fatalities were recorded within a 24-hour period, with one death reported at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) and two others at a private facility, Royal Hospital.

Health officials and hospital sources confirmed that the latest deaths add to an already alarming toll. Including these three cases, a total of 45 children have now died this season with measles-like symptoms, underscoring the persistent public health challenge facing local authorities.

According to RMCH sources, the hospital is currently treating a large number of patients presenting with similar symptoms. At present, 123 children remain under care in the hospital’s paediatric and isolation wards. Over the past 24 hours alone, 18 new patients were admitted, while 32 children were discharged after recovery and clinical improvement.

Since the beginning of the outbreak period, a total of 429 patients with measles-like symptoms have been admitted to RMCH, placing significant strain on hospital resources, particularly isolation capacity and paediatric care units.

A spokesperson for Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Dr Shankar K. Biswas, speaking in his capacity as emergency department in-charge, confirmed that one of the deaths occurred within the hospital over the past day. He noted that the hospital can only officially report deaths occurring within its own facilities, while fatalities in private hospitals are not always reflected in its internal records.

Dr Biswas emphasised the importance of early treatment, public awareness, and timely immunisation to prevent further spread of infection. He also urged guardians to seek medical attention immediately when children develop fever, rash, or other related symptoms, rather than delaying hospital admission.

Health experts suggest that outbreaks of measles can escalate rapidly in communities with incomplete vaccination coverage, particularly among young children. They stress that sustained immunisation campaigns and improved surveillance are essential to controlling transmission.
