Today is a memorable day – the birthday of Bir Sreshtho Noor Mohammad Sheikh.

Today, 26 February, marks the 90th birth anniversary of Noor Mohammad Sheikh, the esteemed Bir Sreshtho of Bangladesh. Born on 26 February 1936 in Mahishkhola village of Narail Sadar Upazila, Sheikh overcame early personal tragedies to leave an indelible mark on the nation’s history. His father, Mohammad Amanat Sheikh, and mother, Jennatunnesa (alternatively Jennata Khanam), passed away during his childhood, yet Sheikh pursued his education up to the seventh grade before embarking on a distinguished career in service to the country.

On 26 February 1959, Noor Mohammad Sheikh enlisted in the East Pakistan Rifles (EPR), the precursor to the present-day Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). He initially served along the Dinajpur border before being transferred to the Jessore sector on 10 July 1970. Rising to the rank of Lance Naik, he was renowned for his bravery and leadership.

During the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, Sheikh played a pivotal role in the 8th Sector, formed around the Jessore area. Under the command of Captain Nazmul Huda, he engaged in fierce battles against the Pakistani forces in the Boyra area of Kashipur, Sharsa police station. From April to August 1971, the 8th Sector was commanded by Colonel (Retd.) Abu Osman Chowdhury, followed by Major S.A. Manzur from September to December.

Tragically, on 5 September 1971, Noor Mohammad Sheikh was martyred in direct combat with the Pakistani army in Goalhati and Chutipur of Jessore. He was laid to rest in his native village of Kashipur, Sharsa, leaving behind a legacy of unmatched courage. In recognition of his supreme sacrifice and heroism during the Liberation War, he was posthumously honoured with the Bir Sreshtho, the highest gallantry award of Bangladesh.

To commemorate his 90th birth anniversary, the Noor Mohammad Trust and the District Administration have organised a series of events today in Noor Mohammad Nagar. These include floral tributes, discussion forums, and prayer gatherings, reflecting the enduring respect and reverence for his life and sacrifices.
