Bayern Munich have set a new Bundesliga single-season scoring record, surpassing their previous mark with five matches still remaining in the campaign. Their current form has also brought them within reach of the all-time scoring records across Europe’s top five leagues, although a significant goal tally is still required to match the highest benchmark.
After 29 matches, Bayern Munich have scored 105 goals in the Bundesliga. This surpasses their previous club record of 101 goals, which had stood since the 1971–72 season, achieved by the team featuring Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller. In the current season, Bayern’s attacking output has been led by Harry Kane with 31 goals, followed by Luis Díaz with 15 and Michael Olise with 12, all of whom have reached double figures.
Bayern now face the possibility of challenging the highest single-season league scoring record across Europe’s top five leagues. However, to reach that mark, they would need to score a further 21 goals in their remaining five fixtures.
Across Europe’s major leagues, the highest single-season scoring records are held by different clubs in each competition, reflecting different eras and formats.
In the English Premier League, Manchester City hold the record with 106 goals scored in the 2017–18 season, surpassing Chelsea’s previous record of 103. Sergio Agüero was the club’s top scorer that season with 21 league goals.
In Spain’s La Liga, Real Madrid set the record with 121 goals in the 2011–12 season, breaking their own previous best. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 46 league goals in that campaign, although Lionel Messi of Barcelona finished as the league’s top scorer with 50 goals.
In Italy’s Serie A, the highest recorded total belongs to Torino, who scored 125 goals in the 1947–48 season over 40 matches. In terms of the modern 38-match format, the record is held by AC Milan, who scored 118 goals in the 1949–50 season. A significant number of the highest totals in Serie A history come from the 1940s and 1950s, with only a few modern exceptions, including Atalanta’s 98 goals in the 2019–20 season.
In France’s Ligue 1, Monaco set a record of 107 goals in the 2016–17 season. This was surpassed the following season by Paris Saint-Germain, who scored 108 goals in 2017–18. Notably, Kylian Mbappé was part of both squads during these record-setting campaigns. Following a reduction in the number of league matches to 34, PSG recorded 92 goals in the most recent season, placing them again among the highest-scoring teams in the competition’s modern history.
