Police Killing Case Ends in Death Sentence

A court in Rangpur has sentenced a 26-year-old man to death in a widely discussed case involving the killing of a police officer during operational duty in 2021. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Marzia Khatun of the Rangpur Metropolitan Additional Sessions Judge’s Court.

Alongside the capital punishment, the convict, identified as Parvez Rahman Palash, was also fined 10,000 taka. In a separate charge under related provisions, the court further sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment.

According to court records, the incident took place on 25 September 2021 in the Sahabganj area of Rangpur city while Assistant Sub-Inspector Piarul Islam of Haragach Police Station was on duty. Prosecutors stated that the accused attacked the officer with a sharp weapon, causing severe injuries. The injured officer was immediately admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he later died while undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, law enforcement authorities filed two separate cases—one for murder and another under the Narcotics Control Act. The accused was subsequently arrested through police operations, and after completion of the investigation, formal charges were submitted to the court.

During the lengthy judicial proceedings, the prosecution presented testimony from 18 witnesses. Both the state and defence counsel submitted detailed arguments before the court reached its final verdict. Authorities implemented strict security measures within and around the court premises during the pronouncement of the judgment.

Prosecutors argued that the charges against the accused were proven beyond reasonable doubt based on witness statements and material evidence. After examining the evidence, the court concluded that the allegations were substantiated, leading to the conviction and sentencing.

Legal observers noted that the judgment sends a strong message regarding offences committed against members of law enforcement agencies, emphasising the judiciary’s firm stance on violent crimes targeting public officials. Following the verdict, lawyers and officials present in the courtroom described the ruling as an important step towards ensuring justice after a prolonged legal process.
