Tragedy in Gajaria: Mother Mourns Son’s Violent Death

Munshiganj, Bangladesh – A tragic and violent incident shook the village of Nayanagar in Gajaria Union on Saturday, 20 December, when 27-year-old Jannat Hossain was fatally hacked while attempting to intervene in a family dispute. The victim’s relatives allege that he was deliberately lured from his home and murdered.

Jannat Hossain, son of Abdul Haque, was reportedly drawn into the conflict by Taslima Begum, the mother of two brothers involved in the dispute. Local sources say that early on Saturday morning, neighbours Tarek and Riyad became embroiled in a quarrel. To mediate, Taslima Begum summoned Jannat, who had been resting at home. Both brothers were reportedly armed with sharp cleavers.

According to eyewitnesses, a violent confrontation ensued, during which Jannat was hacked multiple times. He was rushed to Hamdard General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Dr. Maria Mostari, on duty in the emergency department, said, “He was brought to the hospital around 11 a.m. Following a preliminary examination, he was declared dead. It appears he may have succumbed to excessive blood loss prior to arrival.”

In an anguished statement, Jannat’s mother, Jahanara Begum, said through tears, “My son was asleep at home when Taslima came and called him outside. I followed him, but before I could enter, they began hacking him with cleavers. He just looked at me… how am I supposed to bear this grief?”

Jannat’s elder brother, Raju, added, “We had longstanding disputes over property boundaries. They forcefully seized our land and built a house. When my brother was being attacked, nobody was allowed inside the house to help him.”

Officer-in-Charge of Gajaria Police Station, Md. Hasan Ali, confirmed that police responded promptly to the scene. “The situation has now stabilised. Legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident,” he said.
