The transfer of Mohammad Mainul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Jajira Police Station in Shariatpur, has brought a sense of relief to the local community. Residents had long suffered from his alleged misconduct, including extortion through arrests, threatening wealthy and ordinary citizens by labelling them as ruling party members, altering charges, and embezzling millions via various corrupt practices.
Complaints have been made against him for irregularities in general diary entries and investigations. His prolonged abuse of power had created widespread fear and anger among locals.
Upon hearing the transfer news, hundreds expressed relief on Facebook. Md. Juel Bepari commented, “Among all OCs at Jajira, Mainul Islam was the worst.” Md. Shahid added, “God punish Mainul; he harassed Jajira people and even arrested fish trader Khabir Madbar without reason before leaving.” Liton Akon requested the Anti-Corruption Commission investigate his financial dealings, stating he earned a substantial amount of money illegally in just five months. Another user noted, “He took millions from Jajira.” Mohammad Akash Madbar said, “Alhamdulillah, the people of Jajira can now live peacefully.” Redowan added, “Jajira is saved, but Chattogram is at risk.”
Locals demand a proper investigation into the wealth OC Mainul allegedly acquired illegally. Residents and victims said fear of retaliation had prevented ordinary people, businesspeople, and political figures from speaking against his misconduct. An anonymous lawyer from Shariatpur District Judge Court said, “A local BNP leader was falsely presented as an Awami League supporter in court for refusing to pay OC Mainul.” OC Mainul also reportedly released detainees secretly in exchange for money and extorted funds by arresting BNP workers as Awami League members.
He received monthly payments and was reportedly accompanied by senior Awami League and banned student leaders in district tours. Sources revealed that he attempted to transfer to Naria Police Station, a wealthy area with many expatriates, due to personal financial interests.
The transfer news has raised hopes among Jajira residents that justice will now be more attainable. Before the 13th parliamentary elections, 527 police station OCs were reshuffled via government lottery. Locals expect that the new OC will improve law and order, public service, and accountability.
When contacted, OC Mohammad Mainul Islam said, “Ask those who posted it. I will stay here for another week,” before ending the call.
