Truck Tyre Blast Kills Driver in Kushtia

A devastating workplace accident in Khoksa upazila of Kushtia district has claimed the life of a truck driver following a sudden tyre explosion during repair work at a roadside workshop along the Kushtia–Rajbari regional highway.

The incident occurred on Monday (13 April) at approximately midday in the Khoksa bus stand area, sending shockwaves through the local transport community and nearby bystanders who witnessed the violent blast.

The deceased was identified as Porobesh (40), son of Anwar Sheikh from the Churamankathi area of Jessore district. He was engaged in transporting sand-laden trucks and was reportedly travelling with a convoy when the fatal incident occurred.

Sequence of Events

According to police and eyewitness accounts, three sand-laden trucks were en route from Kushtia towards Madaripur when one of the vehicles developed a technical fault. Excess air pressure inside a tyre is believed to have caused the wheel rim to crack during the journey.

To address the issue, driver Porobesh brought the truck to a local mechanical workshop near Khoksa bus stand for repair. While workers were attempting to fix the damaged wheel, the tyre suddenly exploded with significant force due to the compromised rim structure and internal pressure failure.

The explosion was extremely powerful, causing severe facial injuries to the driver. Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as the driver collapsed immediately following the blast.

He was rushed to Khoksa Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where attending doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Police Confirmation

Officer-in-Charge of Khoksa Police Station, Mosharraf Hossain, confirmed the incident and stated that the death occurred due to a tyre explosion during repair work.

He added that the deceased’s family had been informed, and legal procedures were underway to hand over the body once relatives arrive at the hospital.

Police have initiated a preliminary investigation to determine whether proper safety protocols were followed during the repair process and whether any negligence contributed to the accident.

Safety Concerns in Focus

The incident has once again drawn attention to the hazardous nature of roadside vehicle repair practices in Bangladesh, particularly involving heavy-duty truck tyres that operate under high air pressure.

Experts note that such tyres can become highly dangerous if over-inflated, structurally damaged, or handled without appropriate safety equipment. In many roadside garages, repairs are often carried out in informal settings without protective barriers or specialised tools, significantly increasing the risk of fatal accidents.

Transport workers and local stakeholders have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, improved technical training for mechanics, and greater oversight of roadside workshops to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
