NARSINGDI — A tragic head-on collision between a motorcycle and a pickup van has claimed the lives of two Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) candidates in Narsingdi’s Shibpur upazila. The fatal accident occurred on Saturday, 18 July, as the students were returning home immediately after sitting their afternoon public examination.
The deceased have been identified as Nafiz and Swadhin. Both victims were regular students at the local Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan College and were actively participating in the ongoing nationwide academic assessments. The sudden deaths have cast a sombre shadow over their fellow classmates, college administrators, and the local community.
According to local residents and police authorities, the incident transpired in the afternoon along the busy Itakhola-Monohardi regional highway, specifically in the Bajnab area under Shibpur upazila. Nafiz and Swadhin had just exited their designated examination hall and were travelling back to their respective residences on a single motorcycle.
As their vehicle reached the Bajnab stretch of the highway, an oncoming commercial pickup van, which was empty at the time but traditionally used for transporting poultry, crashed directly into the students’ motorcycle. Eyewitnesses reported that the impact was instantaneous and devastating. The force of the head-on collision flung both teenagers onto the tarmac, causing fatal injuries. Passers-by rushed to assist, but both riders had already succumbed to the severe trauma before emergency medical services could be mobilised.
Upon receiving reports from panicked onlookers, a contingent from the local police administration was promptly dispatched to the highway coordinates. Officers recovered the bodies from the scene and subsequently took custody of both the demolished motorcycle and the empty poultry transport vehicle involved in the crash.
Confirming the details of the tragedy, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shibpur Police Station, Md Kohinur Mia, stated that preliminary reports from the scene corroborated the students’ identities and their academic status at Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan College. “The two boys were returning home after completing their scheduled examination for the day when the pickup van struck them,” the OC noted. Law enforcement officials have launched a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision, and statutory legal actions are currently being initiated against the driver of the impounded commercial vehicle to establish accountability.
