Two Workers Die After Plunge Into Industrial Effluent Tank

Two construction workers have tragically lost their lives after falling into a treatment tank at an under-construction Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) within a factory premises in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila. The industrial accident occurred on Saturday morning, 18 July, at a facility belonging to the Axilend Ceramics Group, situated in the Paragaon area under the Hobirbari union of the sub-district.

The deceased individuals have been identified by authorities as Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, who was employed as a mechanical welder, and Rumel, who worked at the site as a civil construction helper.

Allegations of Institutional Neglect

The fatal incident has sparked intense anger among the factory workforce. According to accounts provided by fellow labourers on duty, the two men were executing routine technical tasks near the elevated mouth of the ETP facility when they suddenly lost their footing and plunged into the deep, chemical-residual tank below.

Crucially, eyewitnesses and co-workers alleged that despite the men remaining trapped inside the restricted confines of the industrial vessel for an extended duration, the factory management failed to initiate any immediate or effective rescue operations. Fellow labourers asserted that a more prompt response from the administration might have prevented the fatalities, pointing to a lack of emergency preparedness protocols on the factory floor.

Law Enforcement and Regulatory Response

Upon receiving reports of the deaths, senior officers from the Industrial Police rushed to the scene to secure the area and control the rising tensions among the agitated workforce. Investigators conducted a preliminary survey of the structural site, mapping out the perimeter where the men had been working.

Providing an initial assessment, the Additional Superintendent of Police for Industrial Police Mymensingh-5, Gopinath Kanjilal, confirmed that a rigorous statutory enquiry is now underway. “We are thoroughly investigating the exact mechanical or human cause behind this tragic plunge,” the senior official stated. “Our team is explicitly assessing whether there was any institutional negligence, systemic failure to provide personal protective equipment, or flagrant violation of established workplace safety regulations by the factory ownership.”

The police administration further assured the public that if the technical enquiry uncovers structural lapses, delayed rescue efforts, or general non-compliance with the Labour Act, strict legal action will be initiated against the factory management. Meanwhile, the grieving workforce has united to demand comprehensive compensation frameworks for the victims’ families, a thorough independent investigation, and the immediate enforcement of stringent safety barriers across all under-construction zones to protect human lives.
