Unidentified Body Recovered from Meghna River in Barishal

An unidentified young man’s body has been recovered from the Meghna River in Hijla Upazila of Barishal, with police now working to establish his identity and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

The body was found on Saturday (27 June) at around 11:00 a.m. near the Chowmuhani area of Baushia, Ward No. 9, under Borojalia Union in Hijla Upazila. Local residents spotted the body floating close to the riverbank and immediately informed the Hijla River Police.

Responding to the report, officers arrived at the scene and recovered the body before transferring it to Hijla Police Station to complete the necessary legal formalities. Authorities said the deceased has not yet been identified, and no official information regarding his age, place of residence or the cause of death has been established.

Officer-in-Charge Md Solaiman Hossain of Hijla Police Station confirmed that the victim’s identity could not be determined during the initial stages of the investigation. He said police have already circulated the deceased’s photograph and relevant details to neighbouring police stations in an effort to match the body with any missing person reports that may have been filed in recent days.

The body has been sent to the morgue for a post-mortem examination, which investigators hope will provide further information about the cause and manner of death. Police said the findings of the examination will play an important role in determining the next course of the investigation.

Law enforcement officials have not ruled out any possibility at this stage. They said it would be premature to speculate whether the death resulted from an accident, drowning, suicide or any criminal act before the investigation and forensic examination are completed.

The discovery attracted the attention of local residents, many of whom gathered near the riverbank before police secured the area and removed the body. Officers have appealed for anyone who may recognise the deceased or possess relevant information to contact the nearest police station so that his identity can be confirmed and his family informed.

Police said legal proceedings are now underway, and the investigation will continue until both the identity of the deceased and the circumstances leading to his death have been fully established.
