Violence in Mexico: FIFA Confident Ahead World Cup

Following the killing of notorious drug lord Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera, violence has surged across Mexico, raising international concerns about the safety of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has sought to reassure fans and organisers that preparations remain on track.

Speaking to AFP in Barranquilla, Colombia, Infantino stated, “We are very confident. Everything is under control. It will be a fantastic tournament.” He emphasised that FIFA’s focus is firmly on safety and operational readiness.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from 11 June to 19 July, jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Mexico will host several key fixtures, including four group-stage matches in Guadalajara, which is the capital of Jalisco state. Among these, the high-profile clash between Uruguay and Spain will be held at the city’s main stadium. Additionally, a play-off tournament at the end of March will determine the final two teams qualifying for the World Cup, jointly hosted by Guadalajara and Monterrey.

The recent military operation that resulted in the death of El Mencho, head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, sparked widespread unrest. Reports indicate that at least 74 people were killed in clashes between security forces and suspected cartel members. The violence extended beyond Jalisco, with cartel affiliates reportedly blocking roads in 20 of Mexico’s 32 states and setting fire to vehicles and commercial establishments. Graphic images and reports from these events circulated internationally, stoking fears just four months before the tournament.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has provided further reassurance, stating, “There is no risk to World Cup spectators. Full safety measures are in place.” Security officials are reportedly deploying enhanced patrols and emergency response teams in all World Cup host cities, including Guadalajara and Monterrey.
