The Japanese government has called for the immediate release of a Japanese national who has been held in Iran for over a month, though officials have provided few details regarding the circumstances of the detention.
Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki told reporters on Wednesday that the individual was detained on 20 January 2026. He added that the Japanese government is maintaining close contact with both the detainee’s family and Iranian authorities. However, Ozaki declined to reveal the person’s identity or provide further details about the incident.
Earlier reports from Radio Free Europe indicated that Shinosuke Kawashima, head of the Tokyo-based broadcaster NHK’s Tehran bureau, had been arrested and subsequently transferred to a Tehran prison. NHK has declined to confirm whether any of its employees have been detained, citing security concerns.
A spokesperson for NHK said:
“At NHK, the safety of our staff is always our highest priority. At this stage, we have nothing further to report.”
Kawashima is listed on NHK World’s website as an international correspondent. Since 2017, he has served as bureau chief in Jakarta, Indonesia, covering a range of global and regional issues. According to his LinkedIn profile, he joined NHK in 2005, establishing a long-standing career in international journalism.
The detention has drawn attention from both Japanese and international media, highlighting concerns over press freedom and the safety of foreign correspondents operating in Iran. Observers note that Iran has, in the past, detained journalists and foreign nationals under ambiguous circumstances, adding a layer of diplomatic complexity to the case.

The Japanese government has emphasised the need for Kawashima’s rapid release and continues to monitor developments closely. This case has renewed debates about the risks faced by international correspondents and underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement to secure the safe return of detained journalists abroad.
