Wasim Khan has decided to step down from his position as General Manager at the International Cricket Council (ICC), bringing an end to nearly four years in one of the sport’s most influential administrative roles. He is expected to formally vacate the post in June, before moving on to a new professional appointment in July.
Khan, a former chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has built a distinguished career in cricket administration following his playing days. He joined the ICC in 2022 after Geoff Allardice assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer. Prior to that, Khan had spent close to three years at the helm of the PCB, where he played a central role in modernising cricket operations and strengthening administrative frameworks within Pakistan’s cricket structure.
His association with the sport began on the field. Khan made history as one of the first British Muslims to play county cricket in England. During the late 1990s, he represented Warwickshire, Sussex, and Derbyshire, establishing himself as a dependable left-handed batter. Over his first-class career, he featured in 58 matches and also played 30 limited-overs games. One of his most notable contributions came during Warwickshire’s 1995 championship-winning season, where he averaged close to 50, underlining his value to the side.
After retiring from professional cricket, Khan transitioned into administration. He later served successfully as Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Cricket Club, gaining recognition for his organisational leadership and strategic planning. His reputation in domestic cricket administration paved the way for senior international responsibilities.
During his tenure at the ICC, Khan was involved in addressing one of modern cricket’s most complex challenges: balancing an increasingly congested global schedule. With the rapid expansion of franchise-based T20 leagues placing pressure on bilateral and ICC events, he contributed to efforts aimed at restructuring the Future Tours Programme for 2023–2027. This included increasing the volume and competitiveness of international fixtures while also introducing, for the first time, a dedicated long-term programme for women’s international cricket.
His departure comes amid a period of significant administrative transition within the ICC, with several senior executives stepping down over the past two years. Analysts suggest this reflects a broader phase of restructuring as global cricket governance adapts to commercial pressures and evolving formats of the game.
| Period | Role | Organisation/Team |
|---|---|---|
| Late 1990s | Professional Cricketer | Warwickshire, Sussex, Derbyshire |
| 1995 | Key performer in championship season | Warwickshire |
| Post-playing career | Chief Executive | Leicestershire County Cricket Club |
| 2019–2022 | Chief Executive | Pakistan Cricket Board |
| 2022–2026 | General Manager | International Cricket Council |
Khan’s exit is widely viewed as another notable shift in global cricket administration. His extensive experience across domestic and international structures is expected to continue influencing governance discussions within the sport, even beyond his ICC tenure.
