A woman in Dhaka’s Azimpur area has gone into hiding after alleging betrayal by her husband, non-payment of maintenance, and threats to circulate intimate photographs on social media. She demanded justice from the highest court during a press conference held yesterday, Saturday 7 February, at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters’ Association in Segunbagicha.
The victim, Sonia Akter, revealed that she married Mohammad Rocky Hossain, a resident of Keraniganj, in 2022. From the very beginning of their marriage, Sonia claims, Rocky’s behaviour was erratic and emotionally unsettling. “Shortly after our wedding, my husband began isolating himself from the family and disappeared into secrecy,” she said. Sonia added that Rocky alternately refuses and acknowledges her as his wife, a pattern that has left her mental well-being under serious threat.
Sonia further alleged that her husband secretly recorded intimate moments of their married life and has threatened to publish them on social media. According to her, some of these photographs have already appeared on Facebook, while additional images are being threatened for release. Rocky Hossain has reportedly demanded five lakh taka (approximately £3,600) to prevent further dissemination of the private photographs.
Appealing to law enforcement, Sonia called upon senior police officials for protection and justice. She stated that she is urgently seeking intervention from the Inspector General of Police and the Superintendent of Police of Dhaka District to safeguard herself from her husband’s intimidation.
