Youth Held With Firearm in Raid

A young man has been arrested with an illegal firearm, ammunition and an unregistered motorcycle during a special police operation in Banchharampur Upazila of Brahmanbaria, while two of his alleged associates managed to flee the scene. Police have filed a case under the Arms Act against all three suspects and said efforts are continuing to apprehend the fugitives.

According to police officials, the operation was conducted in the early hours of Thursday following intelligence reports regarding suspicious movements in the area. At approximately 2:15 a.m., a patrol team from Banchharampur Model Police Station established a temporary checkpoint on a key road in the upazila. Officers carried out routine inspections of vehicles and individuals near the residence of Abdul Aziz, where the operation was centred.

During the checkpoint operation, police observed a young man whose behaviour was deemed suspicious. He was stopped and searched, along with the belongings in his possession. The search led to the recovery of a locally manufactured LG firearm, two rounds of ammunition and a motorcycle that did not bear any registration number.

The suspect was subsequently identified as Siddiqur Rahman, 22, son of Atiqur Rahman and a resident of Borail village in neighbouring Nabinagar Upazila. Police said that two other individuals, identified as Amit, 23, and Limon, 19, were accompanying him at the time of the operation. Upon noticing the presence of law enforcement officers, the pair allegedly escaped before they could be detained.

Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Yasin of Banchharampur Model Police Station stated that all recovered items had been seized in accordance with legal procedures. He noted that investigators are examining whether the firearm had previously been used in any criminal activity and are assessing possible links to wider criminal networks.

Police also confirmed that the arrested suspect has undergone preliminary questioning. Information obtained during the interrogation is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation. Several police teams have reportedly been deployed to track down the two absconding suspects, with investigators gathering and analysing intelligence from multiple sources to determine their whereabouts.

Law enforcement officials emphasised that operations targeting illegal firearms remain a priority as part of broader efforts to curb weapons-related crime. Regular patrols, intelligence-led raids and temporary checkpoints have been intensified in recent months to prevent criminal activities and intercept suspects before offences are committed.

A case has been registered under the Arms Act at Banchharampur Model Police Station. The arrested suspect has been sent through the judicial process for presentation before the court, while police say the search for the remaining accused individuals will continue until they are brought into custody.

Authorities believe that sustained enforcement measures and proactive policing are essential in reducing the circulation of illegal weapons and enhancing public safety across the district.
