In a significant disciplinary incident ahead of Bangladesh’s ongoing national elections, four assistant polling officers were dismissed from their duties at a key polling centre in Babuganj Upazila, Barishal. The event occurred late on the night of 11 February at the Barkani Government Primary School centre in Jahangirnagar Union. Local residents reportedly apprehended the officials and handed them over to the Upazila administration.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asma ul Hosna confirmed that the four officials were relieved of their duties for failing to adhere to administrative directives while performing their responsibilities at the polling centre.
The dismissed officers and their designations are as follows:
| Name | Designation |
|---|---|
| Md. Sabbir Hossain | Assistant Presiding Officer |
| Md. Kabir Hossain | Assistant Presiding Officer |
| Md. Sakhawat Hossain | Assistant Presiding Officer |
| Habibur Rahman | Assistant Presiding Officer |
Md. Abdur Rauf, the Presiding Officer of the centre under the Babuganj Upazila Agriculture Office, stated: “The four officers left the polling centre at night without permission. Local residents detained them and handed them over to the administration, after which appropriate disciplinary measures were taken in accordance with protocol.”
UNO Asma ul Hosna emphasised, “It is entirely unacceptable for officers to be outside the polling centre without the presiding officer’s permission during their duty. Administrative action has been taken against the personnel for violating protocol. The local administration is closely monitoring the situation to ensure order is maintained.”
According to local sources, the officers were apprehended around 1:30 a.m. while attending a meeting at the residence of Md. Rashed Bepari, general secretary of the local Jamaat-e-Islami branch. The incident has sparked considerable concern and discussion among the local community.
Following the dismissals, four new assistant officers were appointed to the polling centre. They have been provided with detailed instructions to maintain discipline and ensure smooth operations. Local police and Red Cross personnel are also present to safeguard voters and support election-day management.
Residents have welcomed the swift administrative response while underlining the need for continued vigilance. Local observer Mr. Shipon noted, “Such conduct threatens the transparency and order of the electoral process. Immediate administrative action was necessary.” Abdul Salam added, “The problem was promptly addressed, but continuous oversight is essential to prevent recurrence.”
Authorities have reiterated that any breach of discipline will not be tolerated. The administration remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and successful election in Babuganj Upazila.
