A school student has gone missing in the Jamuna River in Shahjadpur after attempting to rescue a child during a bathing incident. The event occurred on Wednesday (3 June) at midday in the Bhattapara area under Kaijuri Union.
The missing student has been identified as Tamim Hossain (14), son of garment worker Laskar Ali Molla of the same village. Tamim was a seventh-grade student and had been living with his father in the Konabari area of Gazipur for his studies.
According to his elder sister, Swapanakhatun, Tamim had returned home during the Eid-ul-Azha holiday. On the day of the incident, he went to the nearby Jamuna River with other local boys to bathe. As he did not know how to swim, he was bathing in waist-deep water.
During this time, a seven-year-old child nearby began drowning after entering deeper water. Tamim attempted to rescue the child but himself fell into deeper water and went missing. While the younger child was rescued by others present at the scene, Tamim could not be located.
Following the incident, the Fire Service initiated a search and rescue operation. Shahjahan Ali Molla, Station Officer of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence in Shahjadpur, stated that a team was dispatched immediately after receiving the report and began rescue operations at the site.
