Iranian Drone Strikes Target Saudi Oil

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Iran launched drone and ballistic missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia for the first time following a series of US–Israel operations. The attempted assault aimed at a major Saudi oil facility was thwarted by the Kingdom’s advanced air defence systems, which intercepted all incoming threats before they could reach their targets.

On Friday, 6 March, the Saudi Ministry of Defence confirmed via social media platform X that six drones targeting the Shaybah oil field were successfully destroyed. “The attempted drone strike on Shaybah oil field has been neutralised. Six drones were destroyed before reaching the target,” the ministry stated.

In addition, a ballistic missile fired towards the US-operated Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia was also intercepted and destroyed by the air defence system. “A ballistic missile targeting Prince Sultan Air Base was neutralised before impact,” the ministry added.

The attacks come amid heightened tensions following diplomatic stalemates over Iran’s nuclear programme. From 6 February to 27 February, Tehran and Washington held 21 days of negotiations, which ended without any agreement. The following day, 28 February, the United States launched ‘Operation Epic Fury’ in Iran, coordinated with Israel’s simultaneous ‘Operation Roaring Lion’.

In response, Iran has increasingly targeted US and Israeli military installations across the Middle East with drones and ballistic missiles, signalling a continued cycle of retaliation and counter-retaliation in the region.

The following table summarises the recent strikes and their outcomes:

Analysts suggest that these developments could have broader implications for regional security and global energy markets. Saudi Arabia’s ability to intercept multiple attacks underscores the importance of sophisticated air defence systems in protecting vital energy infrastructure.

Furthermore, ongoing military manoeuvres by the US and Israel, combined with Iran’s retaliatory actions, highlight the fragile security situation in the Gulf. Energy prices may remain volatile, and international attention is increasingly focused on safeguarding critical oil and gas facilities in the region.

This incident illustrates the escalating sophistication of aerial and missile threats in the Middle East, reinforcing the need for continuous vigilance and international diplomatic efforts to prevent further destabilisation.
