A government-issued pistol was forcibly taken from a police officer in the early hours of Monday, 9 March, on the bustling Bangabandhu Road in Narayanganj city. The incident occurred in front of the city’s municipal building in the Nitai Ganj area, raising serious concerns within law enforcement circles. Authorities have confirmed that the matter is being investigated with the utmost urgency.
The victim has been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Lutfor Rahman of the district police. According to police sources, ASI Rahman was on duty and patrolling the area on a government-issued motorcycle while carrying his official firearm.
District Police Additional Superintendent Tasmin Akter verified the incident, stating that Rahman had temporarily separated from his team around 5:45 a.m. to use nearby restroom facilities. At that moment, three unidentified assailants blocked his path. They swiftly surrounded him, brandished threats, and seized his official pistol. Police noted that ASI Rahman was in full uniform at the time of the theft.
Immediately after the incident, the local police station was alerted, and officers issued an area-wide security warning. Multiple police teams have been conducting searches in and around the scene, while CCTV footage from nearby streets is being collected to identify the perpetrators.
Additional Superintendent Tasmin Akter confirmed that intelligence units and several police divisions are actively working in the field to trace and apprehend the suspects. “The recovery of the stolen government firearm and the arrest of those involved are being treated as top priorities,” she said. Preliminary assessments suggest that the assailants were lying in wait and exploited an opportunity when ASI Rahman was briefly alone.
Authorities have also emphasised that measures are being strengthened to prevent similar incidents in the future, particularly regarding the security of police-issued firearms. Ensuring the safety of local residents remains a key concern, and law enforcement agencies are maintaining heightened vigilance along key thoroughfares in the city.
