Mother Hands Son to Police, Mobile Court Sentences

In Sherpur, Bogura, a mother took the extraordinary step of handing over her drug-addicted son to the police, highlighting the severe domestic challenges faced by families grappling with substance abuse. A mobile court subsequently sentenced the young man to three months’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of 50 Bangladeshi Taka. The proceedings were conducted on Tuesday morning by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mahmudul Hasan.

The convicted individual, Sohel Rana, aged 23, hails from Gopalpur village in the Khanpur Union. His mother, Josna Khatun, sought police intervention after years of struggling to manage her son’s increasingly destructive behaviour. Following the court’s verdict, Sohel was transferred to Bogura District Jail under police custody.

Speaking to the press, Josna Khatun detailed the harrowing impact of her son’s addiction. “Sohel has been dependent on various drugs for at least three years,” she said. “During this period, he frequently assaulted us to obtain money for his habit. If we were unable to provide cash, he would vandalise household belongings. We had no choice but to seek the assistance of local authorities to ensure our safety.”

Sherpur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Bikash Chakraborty confirmed the events, stating, “Acting on a formal request from Sohel’s mother, officers apprehended him outside his residence this morning while he was under the influence. The family had observed him damaging property after failing to secure money for drugs. Following his arrest, he was brought before the mobile court, where he admitted to consuming illegal substances. After sentencing, he was handed over to the district jail authorities.”

This case illustrates the growing concern of substance abuse among youth in rural areas and the strain it places on families. Authorities emphasised that timely intervention and support, including legal recourse, remain essential tools in addressing drug-related domestic issues.

Legal experts note that mobile courts serve a dual purpose: they provide swift justice for minor drug-related offences while also sending a strong message to families and communities about the consequences of substance abuse. In Sohel’s case, the mother’s decisive action not only ensured the safety of her household but also facilitated immediate judicial intervention.

Officials urge families facing similar situations to cooperate with law enforcement and take proactive steps, underscoring the importance of social and legal support systems in combating drug addiction and protecting vulnerable family members.
