A 55-year-old man was seriously injured in a violent assault in Fatullah, Narayanganj, after he allegedly protested against illegal drug trading in his neighbourhood. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in the Jamtola Dhopapotti area of Fatullah town, sparking concern among local residents over the influence of narcotics-related crime in the locality.
The injured man, identified as Shyamal Das, currently resides in a rented house in the Jamtola Dhopapotti neighbourhood, although his permanent home is in the Isdair area of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila. Following the attack, he filed a written complaint with Fatullah Model Police Station, accusing several individuals of orchestrating the assault.
According to the complaint, Shyamal Das had repeatedly objected to alleged drug dealing activities taking place in his area. His opposition reportedly angered the suspected traffickers, who had been threatening and intimidating him for some time prior to the attack.
The complaint states that at around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, a group of 10 to 12 individuals, allegedly led by two men named Miraj and Arafat, arrived outside Shyamal Das’s residence armed with locally made weapons. They began verbally abusing him and attempted to provoke a confrontation.
When Shyamal protested against their behaviour, the group allegedly launched a violent attack. Miraj reportedly struck him on the head with a sharp machete-like weapon, leaving him seriously injured. At the same time, Arafat allegedly attempted to strike him with another sharp blade. Shyamal raised his hand to defend himself, resulting in a severe cut to the thumb of his left hand.
The attackers reportedly continued to beat him with iron rods, steel pipes, and wooden sticks, causing multiple injuries. The assault only stopped when local residents rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion. Sensing the presence of witnesses, the attackers fled the area. Before leaving, they allegedly threatened to kill Shyamal if he pursued legal action.
Local residents quickly came to his aid and transported him to Narayanganj Government Hospital in Khanpur, where he received medical treatment for his injuries.
Community members say the area has experienced recurring complaints about illegal drug trading, which has raised concerns about safety and law enforcement. Residents believe that stronger policing and stricter action against narcotics networks are necessary to prevent similar incidents.
