A 25-year-old man named Hridoy Mia has died from severe injuries sustained in a public lynching, having been accused of attempting to burgle a expatriate worker’s home in Narsingdi’s Raipura Upazila. The tragic incident unfolded during the late hours of Sunday night in Singdrapura village, located within the Paratali Union of the sub-district.
According to local accounts, the incident began at approximately 3:00 am when Hridoy reportedly entered the residential premises of an expatriate named Abdul Salam Mia with alleged malicious intent. Residents inside the home woke up upon hearing suspicious noises and quickly realised a trespasser was present. Raising an immediate alarm, they bolted the room doors from the inside out to trap him. Neighbours soon rushed to the scene in response to the commotion, apprehending the young man and tying him up to prevent any escape.
As morning broke, the atmosphere grew tense. While local residents began questioning the detained individual regarding the alleged break-in, the situation rapidly spiralled out of control. An agitated crowd turned violent, subjecting the young man to a severe beating and mass physical assault that left him critically injured. Recognising the gravity of his condition, locals subsequently rushed him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical intervention. Upon arrival, the attending physician, Dr Farjana Akhter, examined him and officially pronounced him dead.
Local law enforcement agencies responded promptly once notified of the tragedy. Officer-in-Charge Md Mujibur Rahman of the Raipura Police Station confirmed the fatality, stating that the victim’s body has been transferred to the morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and formal legal proceedings are currently underway to identify those involved in the vigilante violence.
