Land Dispute Turns Deadly in Kurigram, 17 Arrested

A long-standing land dispute culminated in tragic violence in Kurigram’s Bhurungamari Upazila, leaving a 30-year-old man dead and prompting a massive police response. The fatal clash erupted on Monday afternoon in the Khamar Andharjhar Kanipara area near the Raiganj Bridge within the Andharjhar Union, shattering the peace of the local community.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Shahidul Islam, was the son of local resident Abdul Sheikh. According to local accounts and law enforcement reports, the roots of the tragedy stretch back over a protracted period. Abdul Sheikh and another local resident, Shukkur Ali, had been locked in a bitter territorial contest over an 8-decimal plot of land. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue through local arbitration meetings and hearings at the Union Parishad’s village court, no permanent settlement was reached, leaving underlying tensions to simmer between the two families.
The situation spiralled out of control on Monday afternoon at approximately 2:30 pm. Family members and eyewitnesses reported that Shukkur Ali and his associates arrived at the disputed land with a tractor, intending to plough the soil and prepare it for Aman paddy cultivation. Upon noticing the activity, Shahidul Islam and his relatives rushed to the site to halt the preparations. What began as a heated verbal altercation quickly escalated into a violent physical confrontation. During the clash, Shahidul was struck and severely injured. Family members hurriedly intervened to rescue him and rushed him to a local hospital, where the duty medical officer pronounced him dead upon arrival.
The sudden loss of life sent shockwaves through the area, threatening to trigger further unrest. Promptly alerted to the unfolding violence, a heavily reinforced contingent of local police, led by Bhurungamari Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Muntasir Mamun Moon, rushed to the scene. Swift tactical intervention successfully restored order and brought the volatile situation under control. Launching an immediate combing operation across the area, security personnel detained 17 individuals suspected of direct involvement in the brawl and subsequent homicide, seizing a cache of local weapons in the process.
Confirming the details of the operation, Assistant Superintendent of Police Muntasir Mamun Moon stated that law enforcement agencies have established complete control over the area. He confirmed that 17 suspects have been taken into custody for their alleged roles in the violence, while efforts to track down and apprehend remaining fugitives are actively continuing. Legal procedures are underway to file formal charges against those implicated in the fatal dispute.
