Illegal Gas Connection at BNP Leader’s Home, Fine BDT 100,000

Authorities in Savar have imposed a fine of BDT 100,000 on the residence of a prominent BNP leader and his brother for the illegal use of gas connections, highlighting ongoing concerns over unauthorised utilities in the area.

On Monday, 16 March, a targeted operation was conducted at the home of Golam Mostofa, located in the Kalma area of Savar Sadar Union, following specific complaints. The raid was led by Milton Roy, Executive Magistrate of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Golam Mostofa, who currently serves as the general secretary of Savar Upazila BNP and is a former Union Parishad chairman, along with his brother Arshad Ali, had reportedly been using gas unlawfully in both their residence and an associated factory for an extended period. Departmental authorities stated that previous raids had led to disconnections, yet the brothers had resumed illegal connections.

During the operation, officials discovered a concealed gas riser hidden inside a permanent water tank at Arshad Ali’s residence. The riser was immediately seized, and the unauthorised connection was terminated. Arshad Ali was reportedly absent at the time of the raid; consequently, the magistrate levied the fine on his wife. In the event of non-payment, she is subject to a seven-day imprisonment without parole.

Department sources emphasised that such illegal connections not only violate regulations but also pose serious safety hazards. Improperly installed or concealed gas lines can lead to leaks, fires, and even explosions, underscoring the importance of strict enforcement.

Responding to the incident, Golam Mostofa told our representative via phone that he was currently abroad performing Umrah and was unable to provide detailed comments. He noted that he had heard about the fine imposed on his brother but denied any personal involvement in the matter.

The authorities have reiterated that they will continue routine inspections in Savar and surrounding areas to prevent and penalise unlawful gas connections, urging residents to comply with legal procedures for utility installations.
