Metro Rail Suspended on Eid, Regular Service Elsewhere

In anticipation of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has once again issued an advisory regarding metro rail operations for the residents of Dhaka. The company has clarified that, in line with government holidays and religious observances, metro rail services will be suspended only on the main day of Eid, while operations before and after the festival will continue according to the usual schedule.

For 2026, Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to fall on 21 March, though this date may be adjusted depending on the sighting of the moon. Government officials and employees will enjoy a continuous seven-day holiday, which has been coordinated with the observance of Shab-e-Qadr on 17 March.

According to the official DMTCL announcement:

  • Eid day: Metro rail services will be suspended.

  • Days before and after Eid: Regular services will operate as usual.

  • Advice to commuters: Use alternative transport options such as buses, rickshaws, or taxis on Eid day.

The temporary suspension on 21 March is intended to ensure both commuter safety and convenience amid the holiday rush. DMTCL emphasised that the pause in services is a preventive measure, allowing passengers to plan their journeys more effectively and to rely on alternative modes of transport.

With celebrations taking place across Dhaka, many travellers from surrounding districts are expected to enter the city to join family gatherings or participate in Eid fairs. The advisory specifically urges passengers to anticipate increased traffic congestion and crowding on roads, and to make travel arrangements well in advance.

In summary, metro rail services in Dhaka will be fully operational before and after Eid, providing normal convenience for daily commuters, with a single-day suspension on 21 March to accommodate the festivities. Commuters are advised to plan ahead, ensuring smooth travel during the city’s busiest holiday of the year.
