Funeral Proceedings and Interment
The ceremony saw the attendance of several notable figures, including Mostafizur Rahman Babul, the Member of Parliament for the Jamalpur-3 constituency (Melandah and Madarganj), and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Sumon Chowdhury. Following the conclusion of the prayers, Limon was laid to rest in his family’s private graveyard at approximately 7:30 pm.
Earlier that day, at roughly 3:15 pm, the ambulance carrying the scholar’s body arrived at his village. The return of Limon, who had departed for the United States with high academic ambitions, prompted an outpouring of grief from his family and the wider community. For a village that had celebrated his departure for higher education abroad, the sight of his return under such circumstances marked a profoundly somber occasion.
Paternal Lament and Family Aspirations
Limon’s father, Johurul Haque, spoke of his immense heartbreak regarding the brutality of his son’s death. He reflected on the gentle manner in which he had raised Limon, emphasizing that he had never used physical discipline during his upbringing.
“My greatest sorrow is why they killed my son with such immense suffering,” Mr Haque remarked. “I never caused him any pain in his life. I never even slapped him; I only ever corrected him with my words.”
Mr Haque further shared details of Limon’s devotion to his family’s future. Limon had frequently encouraged his father to resign from his strenuous position at a textile factory, promising to take over the financial responsibilities of the household. Limon had suggested that his father should instead consider entering business for a more comfortable life. When Mr Haque pointed out the lack of capital required for such a venture, Limon had reportedly told him not to worry, assuring him that he would provide everything once he had progressed further in his career.
Academic Excellence and International Pursuits
Jamil Ahmed Limon was recognised as a scholar of significant promise, having navigated the Bangladeshi academic system with distinction before moving to North America. His educational milestones included:
Secondary School Certificate (SSC): Obtained in 2014 from Maona Model High School in Gazipur.
Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC): Obtained in 2016 from Birshreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College in Dhaka.
University Education: He completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Khulna University.
In July 2024, Limon travelled to the United States to begin his PhD at the University of South Florida (USF). His move was the culmination of years of rigorous study and was intended to provide a better life for his parents, who had moved from Jamalpur to Dhaka in 1994 to work in the textile industry. Although the family lived in the capital for decades, they maintained a connection to their ancestral home where Limon has now been buried.
A Plea for Justice and Safety
The incident in Florida was a double tragedy, as it also claimed the life of a young woman named Brishti. During the funeral proceedings, Mr Haque noted that he viewed Brishti with the same affection as his own daughter. He made a formal plea to authorities to ensure that those responsible for the deaths of his son and Brishti receive the maximum legal punishment.
He concluded by expressing a wish that no other parents, whether their children are studying domestically or in foreign lands, should ever have to experience the pain of losing a child to such violence. Local community leaders echoed these sentiments, mourning the loss of a youth who had served as a source of pride for the Jamalpur district.
