A violent clash erupted in Goalnagar Union of Nasirnagar Upazila, Brahmanbaria, following the thirteenth parliamentary election, when announcements made over mosque loudspeakers mobilised rival groups. The confrontation, which began at 2:00 pm and continued until 5:00 pm, left at least 50 people injured, including women. Authorities deployed additional police forces to bring the situation under control.
Eyewitnesses and police officials reported that the clash involved two main factions: supporters of Rahim Talukdar, aligned with the local BNP, and supporters of independent parliamentary candidate Kashem Mia. Tensions had been building since the election day due to alleged irregularities.
Local sources revealed that on the morning of the election, Md. Zia Mia was detained by the military over allegations of attempting to coerce a polling officer at the Goalnagar High School centre to engage in fraudulent voting. A mobile court subsequently sentenced him to ten days in prison. Zia Mia was released three days ago and returned to the area. He suspects that Kashem Mia’s supporter, Shishu Mia, had provided information to the military that contributed to his arrest.
Following these suspicions, on the afternoon of the previous day, Zia Mia’s followers reportedly attacked Shishu Mia and vandalised his motorcycle, further inflaming tensions. Early on Tuesday, a series of minor skirmishes took place throughout the morning, escalating in intensity by midday. At 2:00 pm, Kashem Mia’s supporters used the loudspeaker of Goalnagar Schoolpara Jame Mosque to gather people, while calls from Laluartuk Jame Mosque encouraged supporters to join the confrontation.
Md. Azharul Haque, Chairman of Goalnagar Union Parishad, commented, “The clash was triggered by suspicions of fraudulent voting and miscommunication. Many people have been injured. Efforts are underway locally to prevent further escalation.”
Shahinoor Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Nasirnagar Police Station, confirmed that police had inspected the scene and the situation is now under control. He noted that the precise cause of the clash remains under investigation, and no formal complaints have been filed with the police yet.
