Illegal Trawling Nets and Boat Seized in Maheshkhali

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized an illegal artisanal trawling boat along with several trawling nets in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, and detained one fisherman in connection with the operation. The move forms part of ongoing efforts to protect the region’s marine resources and enforce fisheries regulations.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, the Coast Guard’s media officer, confirmed the operation on Thursday afternoon. He stated that, acting on a tip-off, a special raid was conducted at Jam Ghat in Maheshkhali on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm. The joint operation was carried out by the Cox’s Bazar and Maheshkhali Coast Guard stations.

During the operation, one illegal artisanal trawling boat was seized. Subsequent searches of the boat revealed six trawling nets, estimated to be worth approximately BDT 1.2 million. Lieutenant Commander Sujan emphasised that legal proceedings will be initiated against the arrested fisherman, as well as regarding the confiscated equipment.

He added, “The Bangladesh Coast Guard will continue such operations to safeguard our fisheries resources. Protecting local marine life is a top priority, and we will maintain vigilant oversight to curb illegal fishing practices.”

Illegal artisanal trawling poses a significant threat to marine biodiversity. These small-scale trawlers often harvest juvenile and breeding fish, disrupting the ecological balance and endangering fish stocks that are vital both for local consumption and the wider fishing industry. Experts note that unregulated trawling can lead to long-term declines in fish populations and adversely affect the livelihoods of lawful fishermen.

Local fishermen in Maheshkhali have welcomed the Coast Guard’s intervention, noting that such operations help maintain sustainable fishing practices and protect their livelihoods. Many have expressed hope that continued enforcement will reduce the prevalence of illegal and environmentally damaging fishing methods in the area.

This seizure not only highlights the Coast Guard’s commitment to enforcing fisheries law but also underscores the broader efforts to preserve marine resources along Bangladesh’s coastline, ensuring ecological sustainability and economic stability for the fishing communities dependent on them.
