IDF Chief Warns Of Possible Military Collapse Risk

The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, has issued a stark warning that the Israeli military is facing an unprecedented internal crisis, with the possibility of structural breakdown if current operational pressures continue. His remarks highlight growing concerns over the sustainability of Israel’s armed forces amid multi-front conflicts involving Iran, Hezbollah, and other regional flashpoints.

During a recent security cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, General Zamir reportedly warned that the IDF is under severe strain, driven primarily by a worsening shortage of manpower. He stressed that the military’s increasing reliance on reserve forces is becoming unsustainable, with reservists reportedly nearing exhaustion after prolonged and repeated deployments.

According to Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, the army chief expressed particular concern about the long-term viability of the reserve system, noting that extended operations across multiple theatres are placing exceptional pressure on both active-duty personnel and reservists alike.

Key structural concerns raised by the IDF Chief

Area of concernDescription
Manpower shortageAcute shortages across active-duty and reserve units
Multi-front deploymentOngoing operations in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank
Reserve exhaustionIncreasing inability of reservists to sustain mobilisation cycles
Legislative stagnationDelays in conscription reform and service extension policies
Operational pressureRising risk of systemic breakdown under sustained conflict

General Zamir also criticised the Israeli government for failing to implement long-discussed structural reforms within the military framework. These include the politically sensitive issue of conscripting ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jews, stalled revisions to reserve service regulations, and proposals to extend compulsory military service. He suggested that continued political deadlock over these issues is directly exacerbating pressure on the armed forces.

In what was described as a particularly urgent intervention, the IDF Chief reportedly presented “ten red flags” during the cabinet meeting, warning of potential internal collapse if corrective measures are not urgently adopted. His remarks were later confirmed by The Jerusalem Post, which reported that senior defence officials share concerns over the growing strain on military capacity.

He further underscored the complexity of Israel’s current security environment, pointing to simultaneous military engagements in Gaza, southern Lebanon, Syria, and the occupied West Bank. According to his assessment, this multi-theatre operational reality has created an unsustainable demand for troops and logistical support.

The West Bank was specifically highlighted as an area of escalating instability, with rising violence requiring additional troop deployments. This, he warned, is further stretching already fatigued units and intensifying operational fatigue across the entire military structure.

General Zamir emphasised that without urgent legislative and structural reforms, the IDF will struggle to maintain adequate manpower levels. He cautioned that the absence of decisive policy action is leaving the military exposed to continued overstretch, with potentially serious consequences for operational readiness.

In his most severe assessment, he warned that the armed forces could soon find themselves unable to fulfil core operational responsibilities, even under routine conditions, should current trends persist. He added that prolonged strain risks significantly undermining Israel’s overall military preparedness and long-term defence stability.

The warning comes amid escalating regional tensions and ongoing military operations across multiple active fronts, placing Israel’s defence establishment under sustained pressure.
