A woman was allegedly murdered during a violent armed robbery at her home in Gazipur’s Sadar upazila, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through the local community. The attack occurred late on Tuesday night in the Pirujali Madhyapara village, where assailants reportedly broke into a residential property, tied up family members, and looted cash and valuables.
The deceased has been identified as Asma Akhtar, 55, wife of Anisur Rahman, a local worker employed at a nearby factory. According to police and local sources, Rahman’s son, Nazmul Sakib, works as a night guard at Pirujali Adarsha High School, while the family resided in a relatively quiet neighbourhood known for its small-scale residential settlements.
Witness accounts and preliminary police findings suggest that a group of intruders entered the house around 2:00 a.m. While the household was asleep, the attackers restrained Sakib’s wife, Arifa Akhtar, binding her hands, feet, and mouth to prevent her from raising an alarm. When Asma Akhtar attempted to resist or intervene, the assailants allegedly strangled her using a traditional cloth (locally referred to as a gamcha), leading to her death at the scene.
After overpowering the household, the perpetrators reportedly looted approximately 300,000 Bangladeshi Taka in cash along with gold ornaments and other valuable possessions before fleeing the location.
Local residents alerted authorities in the morning. Police recovered Asma Akhtar’s body from the scene and rescued Arifa Akhtar in an unconscious state. She was later transferred, along with the deceased, to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for post-mortem examination and medical treatment.
A local elected representative, Jalal Uddin, chairman of the Pirujali Union Parishad, confirmed the incident, stating that the victim was killed after resisting the robbery attempt. He also described the event as a deeply distressing crime that has created fear among residents in the area.
Police officials from Joydebpur Police Station stated that legal proceedings have been initiated and that an investigation is underway to determine whether the incident was solely a robbery or if other motives may have been involved.
