A 29-year-old man identified as Mithun was beaten to death in Nawabganj, Dhaka district, in what authorities believe to be a retaliatory attack linked to an earlier violent incident. A local Union Parishad member has been detained for questioning in connection with the killing.
The incident occurred at around 10:00 pm on Thursday in the Chatia area of the upazila. Mithun, son of Kismat Ali from the same locality, was allegedly attacked by individuals associated with a rival group following longstanding local tensions.
According to police and local sources, Mithun had previously been named as an accused in an earlier case. On 24 March, he was allegedly involved in an attack on former Union Parishad member Dolly Akhtar, during which she sustained serious injuries. Following that incident, a case was filed at Nawabganj Police Station, where Mithun was listed as the third accused. Dolly Akhtar is currently undergoing treatment.
In the latest incident, it is alleged that Mithun was forcibly taken from a road in the Chatia area by supporters of the former UP member and subjected to a severe beating. He was later left on the roadside in an unconscious state, presumed dead by the attackers. Local passers-by later found him alive and rushed him first to Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently referred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Pongu Hospital) in Dhaka, where he died in the early hours of Friday morning.
Following the incident, police detained local Union Parishad member Nannu Mia, who is the brother of injured former UP member Dolly Akhtar, for questioning.
Attempts to obtain comments from Mithun’s family were unsuccessful as relatives were reportedly occupied with arrangements related to the body in Dhaka.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and that a formal case is in the process of being filed.
Inspector (Investigation) Mizanur Rahman of Nawabganj Police Station stated that the killing appears to be linked to prior enmity between the two parties. He also noted that Mithun had multiple prior cases filed against him.
