Death Sparks Tension in Magura Raid

A wave of public anger and tension has engulfed a locality in Magura district following the death of a man during an anti-narcotics operation conducted by the Department of Narcotics Control. The incident has triggered serious allegations from locals, who claim that the man died as a result of physical assault during the raid. The deceased has been identified as Akbar Molla, aged 40, a resident of Charpara village under Binodpur Union in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura. Family members and local residents say he worked as a labourer at a brick kiln and had no known serious criminal involvement prior to the incident.

According to eyewitness accounts, a team from the district office of the Department of Narcotics Control carried out an anti-drug drive in the area on Saturday night at around 10:30 pm. It is alleged that during the operation, Akbar Molla was taken out of his home while he was asleep and subjected to physical force. Locals claim that he subsequently lost consciousness and died on the spot.

News of the death quickly spread, triggering outrage among residents. A confrontation reportedly ensued between angry locals and members of the law enforcement team involved in the operation. The situation escalated into chaos, and police and other authorities struggled to bring it under control. Several officials from the narcotics control department were reportedly injured during the incident.

Magura Additional Superintendent of Police, Mirajul Islam, stated that approximately 300 grams of cannabis were recovered during the raid. He confirmed that a man detained during the operation later died, but emphasised that the precise cause of death has not yet been established. He added that the matter would be clarified following the post-mortem examination, after which appropriate legal steps would be taken based on the findings.

The Department of Narcotics Control has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, which has intensified public concern.
