Three Remanded in Extortion Case

A Dhaka court has ordered the remand of three individuals, including the prime accused, in a case involving alleged extortion targeting a specialist kidney and urology treatment centre in the capital. The court directed that each of the accused be placed on a three-day remand for further interrogation in connection with the ongoing investigation.

The order was issued on Tuesday by Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam following a hearing on a petition submitted by the investigating officer. During the proceedings, state prosecutors argued in favour of granting remand, stating that custodial interrogation was essential to uncover the full extent of the alleged extortion network. Defence lawyers, however, opposed the plea, seeking bail for their clients and describing the allegations as unsubstantiated. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand for each of the accused.

The individuals placed on remand have been identified as Moin Uddin, the principal accused, along with MB Swapan Kazi and Md Shaon Hossain.

According to case documents, the incident relates to allegations of extortion and intimidation directed at a kidney disease and urology treatment facility located in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka. The case was filed on 11 April at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by the operating theatre in-charge of the medical centre, who is the complainant in the matter. The complaint names Moin Uddin as the principal accused, alongside several unidentified individuals.

The First Information Report (FIR) alleges that Moin Uddin and his associates had been demanding a sum of five lakh taka from the medical centre over an extended period. When the demand was refused, they are said to have resorted to repeated threats and intimidation tactics directed at the complainant.

The allegations further state that on the day of the incident, the accused gathered in front of the complainant’s residence in an attempt to exert pressure on him and his family members to fulfil their monetary demands. The situation reportedly escalated later when the group assembled a crowd of nearly fifty individuals outside the medical facility, allegedly creating disorder, chanting slogans, and verbally abusing staff in an effort to disrupt normal operations.

Law enforcement officers subsequently intervened and brought the situation under control, detaining several individuals from the scene. Some of those previously arrested had already been remanded earlier for interrogation. Police sources indicate that the latest remand will allow investigators to probe deeper into the structure of the alleged extortion ring, its financial transactions, and the possible involvement of additional accomplices.

Investigators have stated that questioning during the remand period will focus on identifying the wider network behind the extortion attempt and establishing links between the accused individuals and any organised criminal activity.
