A mosque imam in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila was detained by local residents after he was found inside the home of a woman during the late hours of Saturday night, prompting widespread discussion in the area.
The incident took place around midnight in the Deragathi Madhyapara locality under Chandikona Union. According to local accounts, several residents spotted Md Selim, the imam of Deragathi Madhyapara Jame Mosque (Tangail Para), inside the residence of Ms Shanu Begum, the widow of late Al Amin. The discovery quickly drew attention, and word of the situation spread across the neighbourhood, leading to a gathering of residents who subsequently detained him.
Community members stated that Md Selim had been serving as the imam of the mosque for nearly a decade, a role that typically carries considerable respect and moral responsibility in rural communities. The sudden nature of the incident has left many residents divided in their reactions, with some expressing concern over the circumstances while others are awaiting further clarity.
Md Selim provided his account of the matter, stating that he had been in communication with Shanu Begum over mobile phone for approximately one and a half months prior to the incident. He explained that this ongoing contact led him to visit her residence during the night, after which local residents arrived and detained him.
Shanu Begum also spoke about the situation, stating that there was a mutual relationship between them and expressing her willingness to marry him. Her remarks have added another layer of complexity to an already sensitive matter within the community.
Local social dynamics in such rural settings often mean that personal relationships involving religious figures can become highly scrutinised, particularly when they occur outside conventional expectations. The presence of a mosque imam in such circumstances has naturally intensified public attention and debate in the area.
Police have confirmed awareness of the incident. Officer-in-Charge Md Ahsanuzzaman of Raiganj Police Station said that no written complaint had been formally submitted as of yet. He added that if a complaint is lodged, the matter will be investigated and appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.
As the situation stands, the matter remains under observation, with local authorities yet to receive formal documentation to proceed further.
